Issue #2
July 1, 1999
July Holidays
The editors of NewBytes would like to wish our American Alpha Gams a Happy Independence Day and our Canadian Alpha Gams a Happy Canada Day!

Canadian Focus

Since this issue of NewsBytes is being published on Canada Day, we thought it would be appropriate to focus on what some of our Canadian Alpha Gams are up to. Some of this information was taken from the Winter 1997 issue of the Alpha Gamma Delta Quarterly.

Canadian Facts

In respect of Canada's association with the British Monarch, Canadian chapters use a unique armorial bearings which doesn't include the royal helmut.

Alpha Gamma Delta has had one International President from Canada. Lorna Wilson Brigden, from Tau chapter, served from 1967-1972. Lorna is now Chapter Grand.

Canadian Distinguished Citizens

1961 Dorothy Cadwell - Beta Gamma - Government
1966 Jean Carter - Alpha Zeta - Administration
1975 Jean Arnold Tory - Tau - Public Service
1981 Lillian Sarafinchen - Tau - Film and Art
1985 Jocelyn Palm - Tau - Sports

Recognition for Canadian GLOs

Greeklife organizations (GLOs) at many Canadian universities are not supported as registered student organizations. There are two ongoing initiatives working to get the Canadian chapters the recognition they deserve: a website devoted to Canadian chapters of GLOs and the creation of an annual conference specifically for the Canadian chapters of the GLOs. Both of these initiatives were jumpstarted by Alpha Gams.

Canadians Go Greek!

There are several large Greek directories on the net these days. However, until recently, there was never one that focused on the decidely smaller Canadian greek system.

Canadians Go Greek! (CGG) was created by Chantal Coulen (ZX '93) in September 1998 in an effort to provide focus on greek life in Canada. CGG includes a complete listing of greek organizations at each Canadian university, plus links to each organization's website. The site also includes a section called Philanthropy Focus which highlights a different organization's philanthropy each month. Other features of CGG include a listing of various chapter events, links to other greek websites and an alumnae section which currently includes information about Alumnae Panhellenics.

For more information, please visit CGG or email webmaster@canadiangreeks.com.

Canadian Interfraternal Conference

On the weekend of February 19-21, 1999, the first annual Canadian Interfraternal Conference (CIFC) was held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Marcie Brulotte (DK '96) chaired the event.

"The goal of the conference is to develop a stronger fraternity system within Canada, and strengthen bonds between the different campuses across Canada." - Excerpt from CIFC Website

The first annual CIFC was quite successful and many positive things came of it; the most important being the creation of the Canadian Interfraternal Association (CIA). The Association will be broken into several areas of responsibility - one being the CIFC.

Watch the CIFC website for additional information about the outcome of the first annual Conference. Also watch for info about CIFC 2000, which will be hosted at the University of Ottawa, to be posted in the July/August timeframe!

Alpha Gams with Altitude

Convention 1999, titled "Alpha Gams with Altitude," will be held next week, July 7-11, at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Denver, Colorado.

As has become tradition at Convention, the first evening's Foundation dinner is a costume dinner. This year's theme, Millennium Magic, will find Alpha Gams dressed in costumes that highlight the 20th century.

Other Convention activities include alumnae and collegiate workshops, various business sessions, an info/idea fair, several luncheons, the Epsilon Pi Banquet and Feast of Roses.

The editors of NewsBytes will be in attendance at Convention 1999, so check out the next issue on July 15 to find out all the scoop!

Chapter Announcements

Exciting things are always happening in our chapters. We win first place in campus competitions, get noticed for going above and beyond in philanthropic activities, have a chapter member who becomes famous, celebrate major anniversaries and much more! This space is dedicated to helping chapters make their announcements to the world.

Delta Gamma Chapter 75th Anniversary

The Delta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Gamme Delta at Montana State University-Bozeman, will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary during MSU Homecoming Festivities in September. A great weekend of sisterhood activities is planned and we want to include everybody! We have a big task ahead of us to make sure that we can invite all alumnae, so if you think there is a possibility that we don't have your current address, please email it to tcarter@abc18-28.com or send it to Tanaya Carter, 1217 West Story, Bozeman, MT 59715, (406) 586-1158. Also, if you are an alum who would like to help with the planning of this event or have suggestions, feel free to contact me. I'd love your help and ideas.

Looking forward to a great anniversary!
Tanaya Carter
