Panhellenic Community
Alpha Gamma Delta is one of 26 fraternal organizations for women recognized
by the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). Members of the other 25
groups have much in common with our Alpha Gam sisters: we all embody the
Panhellenic spirit of sisterhood, friendship, leadership and charity.
During the competitive Recruitment season, it is important to maintain the bonds of
Greek friendship with members outside of Alpha Gamma Delta. This issue of
NewsBytes is dedicated to Panhellenic community and will serve as a resource
for finding Panhellenic friends on the World Wide Web.
More about NPC
The National Panhellenic Conference has served as an umbrella organization for many
national and international women's fraternities and sororities since its founding in 1902.
There are currently 26 NPC member groups, with the most recent being admitted in 1951. Alpha
Gamma Delta was admitted in 1909. Currently, for an organization to be admitted into the
NPC, the following requirements must be met:
- The organization must have been established in its national character for a minimum
of 13 years;
- All of the organization's collegiate chapters must be established in senior colleges
and universities that are authorized to confer a bachelor's degree and that have received
a satisfactory rating by the pertinent recognized regional association of colleges and
secondary schools;
- The organization must have at least 14 chapters, of which the latest establishment
is at least two years old.

The NPC website includes
generous information about the history of Greek life for women, NPC member agreements
and resolutions, as well as instructions on starting an Alumnae Panhellenic
in your area. Alumnae Panhellenics will be the focus of an upcoming
NewsBytes issue, so please look forward to seeing it soon.

State of the Greek System
Joann Barton Vaughan, alumna of Kappa Kappa Gamma, wrote an article entitled " Back to the Future -
What lies ahead for sororities?" for KKG's Spring 1997 issue
of The Key.
In this article, Marian Klingbeil Williams, KKG's then-NPC Delegate,
shares her views on the Greek system. Where are we compared to where we were in 1900 and where
are we going to be in 2000?
