Issue #10
January 2000
Happy New Year!
AlphaGam.Net would like to wish all Alpha Gams and other interested readers a very happy New Year! Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2000!

Site of the Month

Have you noticed that there are some really great Alpha Gam sites online? AlphaGam.Net would like to start featuring a Site of the Month in our issues of NewsBytes. The AlphaGam.Net Site of the Month will be awarded to one website each month that gets the most votes from our readers.

Please take some time to visit all the Alpha Gam websites so you can cast your vote wisely. You can find all the sites listed on the various Links pages. Or, you can visit 50+ sites by starting at the Webring page and following the ring around.

To cast your vote, please send an email to SiteOfTheMonth@alphagam.net with the name of the chapter, the address of the website and some brief comments as to why you feel the site should win.

When voting, please try to take the following into consideration: clean design, complete information (the entire site shouldn't still be under construction), timely/updated information.

Around the Web

There are a ton of cool and useful sites out there on the web. This section provides links to some of the ones we know about. If you know of a cool or useful website that you think others will be interested in, let us know! Email news@alphagam.net and we'll consider your suggestion for a future issue of NewsBytes!

Portals - what are they?

Excerpts from whatis.com:

"Portal is a new term, generally synonymous with gateway, for a World Wide Web site that is or proposes to be a major starting site for users when they get connected to the Web or that users tend to visit as an anchor site. There are general portals and specialized or niche portals. Some major general portals include Yahoo, Excite, Netscape, Lycos, CNET, Microsoft Network, and America Online's AOL.com. Examples of niche portals include Garden.com (for gardeners), Fool.com (for investors), and SearchNT.com (for Windows NT administrators).

A number of large access providers offer portals to the Web for their own users. Most portals have adopted the Yahoo style of content categories with a text-intensive, faster loading page that visitors will find easy to use and to return to. Companies with portal sites have attracted much stock market investor interest because portals are viewed as able to command large audiences and numbers of advertising viewers.

Typical services offered by portal sites include a directory of Web sites, a facility to search for other sites, news, weather information, e-mail, stock quotes, phone and map information, and sometimes a community forum. Excite is among the first portals to offer users the ability to create a site that is personalized for individual interests."

Interested in setting up a portal site? Check out one of the sites linked above or find others listed in Yahoo's Portals category.

Chapter Announcements
Exciting things are always happening in our chapters. This space is dedicated to helping chapters make their announcements to the world!

Theta Nu Chapter Doubles in Size

The Theta Nu chapter of Virginia Commonwealth University has doubled our chapter size with twenty-two new sisters! We are very excited in our growth and cannot wait to show our campus what we can do as we continue to grow. Our very own Brandi Mathis is running the St. Judes Dance-A-Thon that will take place in March. This event will raise money for the St. Judes Children Hospital. Many other Alpha Gams are helping out on commitees. We are making our presence known!
